Field Assessment of Pakistan Earthquake
On Feb 2006, Johnson Medical participated on a relief
missionto perform an assessment on the medical facilities in Bagh, Pakistan.
Johnson Medical understand the need to perform site assessment in order for us
to design field hospital systems that can cater for the need of our customers.
Among the factors to be considered including the enormous logistic challenges in
a disaster like an earthquake and the coordination with local authorities and
NGOs.
Background on Pakistan Earthquake Oct 2005
A powerful earthquake flattened entire villages of mud brick homes, triggered
landslides and toppled a 10 storey apartment on Saturday 8th October
2005. The US Geological Survey reported a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurring at
34.43N, 3.54E. Strong tremors were felt in northern Pakistan, rocking buildings
in the capital of Islamabad. Casualties in exceed of 50,000 with 74,000
injuries. 26 hospitals have been destroyed or are too unstable to be used. Most
of the 600 health clinics in the affected areas have also been destroyed. The
number of homeless is estimated to exceed 3 million.
Unicef estimated 32,000 children dead, 42,000
childred injured and up to 250,000 children left without assistance.
